11 October 2011: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Aggreko, the world leader in the provision of temporary power and temperature control services, has successfully delivered its project to supply the energy and cooling requirements to the ‘Cidade do Rock’, the venue for the latest addition of Rock in Rio, the world’s largest music festival. The festival concluded on Sunday following seven days of performances spread over the last two weekends, and saw some of the most popular local and international music acts perform in front of a combined live audience, in excess of 700,000 music fans.
The energy required to power Rock in Rio was immense. Aggreko supplied a power package with a total capacity of 18.195 kVA, which is enough energy to simultaneously power more than 13,000 Brazilian households. This power was distributed across the festival site to run all aspects of the event, from the all important sound and stage lighting, to the kiosks and other audience amenities. In addition, the system also supplied the power required for the live television broadcast.
As the leading provider of temporary energy to the worldwide events industry, Aggreko brings a wealth of experience in supplying power to many of the world’s largest cultural and sporting events. For Rock in Rio, all the power for the stage areas and broadcast equipment was set up with two identical, yet completely separate power systems. This technique of having both a primary, and a backup system guaranteed that the festival had 100% power availability, in order to cover any possible disruption to the primary power.
In addition to power, Aggreko also provided the air conditioning for all the VIP areas in order that the performers were kept cool and comfortable when they weren’t out on stage. The 650-tonne cooling package provided air conditioning to the backstage and press areas, with a total combined area of 4,050 sq metres.
Commenting on Aggreko’s operations at Rock in Rio, Walter Ramires, Engineering Director, Rock in Rio, said “Aggreko demonstrated their experience and expertise in major events across their entire involvement with Rock in Rio. The fact that throughout the event, the power supply and cooling of the VIP zones never once crossed my mind is testament to the quality and reliability of both their equipment and their personnel.”
“Aggreko is proud to have played such a key role in the enormous success that was this year’s edition of Rock in Rio,” commented Diógenes Paoli Neto, Managing Director, Aggreko South America. “To supply the energy and cooling for such a high profile, international event is a great responsibility. Aggreko was able to apply the knowledge and expertise we have acquired from supplying similar solutions to many of the world’s great cultural and sporting events, which ensured that our contribution to Rock in Rio was flawless.”
